Today we arrived in Jodhpur in Rajasthan. You may recognize the name from those silly trousers the horsy women wear. Funny story.
The maharaja from a couple of generations ago, had a wife who, over the years, developed unsightly fat bulges at the tops of her thighs. She simply wouldn't believe his protestations that she remained the most beautiful woman in the kingdom. At his wits end, he asked a tailor to make trousers with the same unsightly bulges, for the entire court to wear. Now we will all look the same.
On a completely different subject, he was also a polo nut, and had established one of the top polo teams in the world. In fact, a Rajasthani polo team went on to win the world title.
Soon after the new trousers became compulsory, one of his polo teams was off to England for a few matches. They took, and wore, these absurd trousers. If they had lost their games, they would have become a laughing stock in England. As it happened, they completely outclassed their opposition in every match.
Desperate to save face, the only excuse one captain could give was that the players from Jodhpur were wearing trousers that must have given them unprecedented flexibility and maneuverability on their horses.
The English polo set took to this idea, and insisted on mimicking the trousers. It seemed to make a difference, so now every horse rider chooses to wear these absurd trousers. For the want of a better name, they were named after the team that first wore them to victory. They became jodhpurs.
