Harry’s Place

Sunday August 25

Busy day.

Did Downton, and then off to Windsor. As we left Highclere, we followed the exit signs. Good idea to separate the innies from the outies, with a fairly narrow road up to the house. Don’t know if I missed a turn, but we ended up nowhere near the bridge beside Carnarvon. We came out onto a different main road altogether. But Gladys knows the way, so we’re all good.  For the last half of the drive we were on the M4, but because of some ongoing upgrading, we were stuck at 50mph for most of it. Snore. When you have three lanes to choose from, 70mph is easy to get used to. Funny, because when we started, I was complaining about how the expected us to do 60 mph through the winding country lanes. I still think 60 is nuts in those areas, but the motorway is different. Because Gladys always knows the speed limit (and it changes a LOT), if I go one mile over, my HUD starts flashing in red. If she notices (she always notices), my self-appointed driving instructor starts lecturing about getting a speeding ticket.

What I find strange, because there are constant signs about speed cameras, is that when I’m buzzing along in the middle lane between 69 and 70 mph, car after car passes me in the right lane. Clearly for the locals, the limit is merely a guide. Even Suzuki Swift’s or Nissan Fuglys are just walking past me at more than 80. God knows how long they last here.

Found our hotel in Windsor. Castle Hotel. Perfect location. Virtually across the road from the real Castle. Very cool. Being a school town and a touristy town, there is a great buzz here. Pubs and bars up the wazoo. Stopped at a Greek restaurant for lunch, then after seeing to the shops, did Thai for dinner.

After dinner, we followed the road down a bit, and there is the river Thames. Across the river is Eton, the place where they invented one of the worlds best meringue desert.

There was a tour boat about to set off, so we quickly bought tickets and jumped on. Don’t worry, I did check that it was coming back here first.

Some cool sights. Canal boats posh and not. Ducks and swans. So many swans. And Sarah says she saw a fox. Only a foxes arse, apparently, as it disappeared when our boat came near.

Having a drink in the hotel bar at the moment. Tomorrow we will drive to Hampton Court Palace, then come back here for the Castle tour. We decided that the only way to see Hampton court was from here. It’s only a 30 minute drive. From the city it’s just too hard.
