Beirut

No. That’s not right.

We’re in Biarritz. This is a coastal town, on the Atlantic.

Apparently a bit of a Mecca for the surfing set.

On our way here, we stopped for lunch at a town called Lourdes. You’ve probably heard of it. And no, it’s not the kiwi singer’s house.

Some impressive church buildings.

As you know, this place is famous for the healing powers of the waters. Not from the river, but from a spring that appeared during a series of visions or apparitions that a young girl had.

There is an entire industry for people coming to be healed, many needing help to get there. An army of young people moving around pushing wheelchairs and other devices to get it done.
This is something I saw a lot…

It can be pulled, or the occupant can self-steer while somebody pushes.

There are also a battalion of nuns, nurses and nurse/nuns looking after all and sundry.

Some equally impressive church businesses.

Any statue, effigy or branded souvenir you never thought of is available here. You can even buy bottles to fill with water from one of the many fountains built for the purpose.

Let’s not forget the candle industry. Unlike the votive tealight candles in most churches, this is more on the scale of Fatima.

Now for Biarritz.

Some very old buildings and some very dramatic sea views.
