Beaune

The first night will be in Lyon, but on the way we stop at a little town called Beaune. This place is famous in its own lunchtime because of a guy called Nicolas Rolin. He had become very wealthy, and had become concerned that he would not go to heaven when he died. To salve his conscience for a litany of ills, he poured his resources into a hospital for the poor, called the Hôtel-Dieu.

After lunch it’s off to Lyon for the night.

Next morning we’re on the road early, and we’re off to Avignon, a historic fortified city that once housed a succession of popes for a while.

One of the most interesting things to me was that the cafe where we stopped for lunch, had their bathrooms up a highly decorated spiral staircase.

Back on the road, we were off to Monaco.
