Off to SAN Sebastian

An uneventful night at Pamplona. Someone has turned off the bull-tap, because they weren’t running.

A short drive to San Sebastián for a couple of days. We went up and around the tail of the Pyrenees, and parts of it felt like the drive along the river to Queenstown.

As is often the case, old town has more character and charm than any of the newer areas.

The odd church….

Sarah is still doing her votive thing, and it’s starting to cost me. The one thing she won’t do, however, is the electric votive. Some churches have started doing it. Probably smoke damage, or global warming. That big church the other day had that. Drop a coin and a light goes on. Pathetic!! Triggers her Tourette’s.

At least the ones up at Montserrat were full-arsed church candles, maybe 150mm by 50mm.

What we buy as votives at home are tiny things that may burn for an hour. These big boys would burn your house down and keep burning for a week. 5 euros for 2 fat candles was a good deal.

The old town has so many cafes, bars, restaurants, cafe bars, cafe restaurants and not forgetting the ubiquitous bar restaurants.

They also pride themselves on something called pintxos, also spelt pinchos, which is phonetic.

It’s effectively a Basque snack or appetizer, a posh tapas that uses a toothpick to hold the goodies onto a piece of bread.

For the terminally tedious, the name comes from the Spanish verb ‘pincher’, meaning to poke (Stop it!!), or to pierce, referring to the toothpick.

When in Rome…
…where are these toothpicks you speak of?

We’ve been cheated!!! Thundering typhoons!!
