Day Four

This was an easy day.

Ricky and our driver picked us up and took us to the airport.
The flight on China Eastern was included in the package.

Ricky escorted us through check-in and said goodbye to us at security.

We cannot praise Ricky highly enough. He has set a new standard for local guides. It's obvious that he really enjoys what he does.

Next stop is Xi'an, a little to the left of Beijing.

We saw these signs in the arrivals area in Xi'an. For a city that I had never heard of, the airport is huge. You start reading the advertising as you walk for miles to the baggage claim.
Anyway, the sink looks cool. Some kind of dishwasher on one side. Clever bastards.
Something else we noticed on our walk. Little sleeping pods, again in the arrivals/transit area. Go figure.

So this is the arrivals hall for the city I'd never heard of before Sarah began her PhD.
Nothing to sneeze at.

We were met by our new guide, Jack. Traditional Chinese name. Took us to our hotel for this leg of the tour, the Hilton Xi'an. They certainly provide nice hotels on this tour.

Part of the tour package is an opera performance in Xi'an. It was entertaining enough, but I was most impressed by the technology. Stuff like the use of LED screens as the cyclorama, with removeable panels, so there was constant movement on the back screen, rather than a static backdrop. Boring shite to normal people.

The theatre included a tabled area covering the back half of the theatre.
People could order food and drinks before the show, and munch slurp and burp their way through the show.

As luck would have it, one of the patrons was having a birthday that night, and scantily-clad girls from the show came down to his table with a cake. A muscle-bound warrior (actor) followed them with a nasty looking spear. As you can see above, the spear was given to the guest to cut his cake.
Just a little foolishness to get the evening started.

All good fun.
